Gift the Gift of Sight

Corneal blindness is the second most common cause of avoidable blindness in Nepal after cataract. For many people affected by corneal blindness, a corneal transplant can restore useful vision and significantly improve quality of life. However, the availability of suitable donor corneas depends on a strong culture of eye donation within the community.

Established on 16 November 2007 in collaboration with the Nepal Eye Bank, Tilganga Eye Centre, and NNJS-C, the Biratnagar Cornea Collection Centre is committed to promoting eye donation and facilitating the timely collection of healthy donor corneas for patients in need.

Community Engagement – Creating a Culture of Eye Donation

Our primary focus is to engage with the community and create awareness that eye donation is one of the most meaningful gifts a person can give after death.

We work closely with community organizations, social groups, religious institutions, educational institutions, and local communities to spread awareness about eye donation and address common myths and misconceptions.

Our community engagement activities include:

  • Awareness workshops with social and community organizations
  • Programs with religious and cultural groups
  • Awareness sessions in schools, colleges, and educational institutions
  • Community meetings and interactive awareness programs
  • Door-to-door awareness activities
  • Distribution of educational pamphlets and information materials
  • Display of eye donation posters and awareness messages
  • Radio advertisements and awareness programs
  • Radio interviews through local FM stations, including Koshi FM, Image FM, and Purwanchal FM
  • Community-based campaigns promoting eye donation and donor registration

Engaging Healthcare Professionals

Creating a successful eye-donation program requires active participation from healthcare professionals.

We conduct awareness and educational programs for medical personnel, nurses, hospital staff, medical and nursing students, and other healthcare workers. These programs emphasize the importance of identifying potential eye donors, communicating with families sensitively, obtaining timely consent, and notifying the cornea collection team as early as possible.

Through these initiatives, we aim to make eye donation an integral part of appropriate end-of-life care and hospital-based practice.

Social Media & Digital Awareness

Recognizing the growing importance of digital communication, the Biratnagar Cornea Collection Centre also conducts active social media awareness programs.

Through our social media platforms, we regularly share:

  • Eye donation awareness messages
  • Educational information about corneal blindness and transplantation
  • Eye donation myths and facts
  • Information on how to become an eye donor
  • Awareness campaign materials
  • Community activities and outreach programs
  • Messages encouraging families to discuss and support eye donation

Our goal is to extend the reach of eye donation awareness beyond traditional community programs and engage a wider, especially younger, audience through digital platforms.
