Research Department of LEECS:

LEEC-S formerly known as EREC-P, since its inception, researches are carried as an integral part of the organization. In 2017, the establishment of the research department further strengthened the plan, conduct and reporting of research activities. NHRC approved institutional review committee (IRC) has been operating since 2018 at Biratnagar Eye Hospital, Biratnagar.

The department support in proposal development, data analysis and manuscript writing by the clinical and non-clinical staffs of both the hospital. It also coordinates and take a lead to conduct capacity building training for researchers. Various operational research has been done independently and in a team at both the hospital. It supports to strengthen (IRC) Institutional Review Committee of Biratnagar Eye Hospital. LEECS publishes its work since its inceptions Dr. A. Hening, who is the first EREC-P directors has significantly contributed in the field of Ophthalmology like Fish hook technique which is first developed by Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital.

As part of a recent research collaboration agreement between Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital (SCEH), Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS), and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), a five-year long cornea research project has started. The first phase of this project is a multi-centre, randomised controlled clinical trial comparing topical chlorhexidine 0.2% to topical natamycin 5% for the treatment of fungal keratitis. Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital, Lahan, has been chosen as the study site for Asia. More than 200 publications have been done till 2025 and every year more than 15 publications has been done.
