CORNEA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Introduction
The Cornea Fellowship Program at Biratnagar Eye Hospital provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis, medical management, and surgical treatment of corneal and external ocular diseases. The program places strong emphasis on hands-on clinical and surgical experience while also providing fellows with opportunities to engage in clinically relevant research.
Fellows are trained in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of ocular infections, supported by the hospital’s in-house ophthalmic microbiology Laboratory. The curriculum also includes current approaches to the management of dry eye disease, autoimmune and allergic ocular conditions, corneal dystrophies, and degenerative disorders.
The fellowship offers extensive exposure to corneal, conjunctival, and ocular surface reconstructive procedures. Fellows gain practical experience in pterygium management, including Pterygium Extended Removal Followed by Extended Conjunctival Transplantation (PERFECT), as well as corneal transplantation procedures, Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK). Training also includes lamellar keratoplasty techniques, particularly Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) and Descemet Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK). Fellows will gain practical experience in the assessment and management of keratoconus, with training in corneal topography and corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL). In addition, fellows will have the opportunity to observe advanced refractive surgical procedures, including LASIK and Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), performed using excimer laser technology.
Overall, the fellowship is structured to equip trainees with advanced knowledge, clinical skills, and surgical competence in the comprehensive management of corneal and external eye diseases.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the fellowship, fellows will be able to:
- Make appropriate clinical decisions based on sound medical knowledge and evidence-based practice.
- Diagnose and effectively manage a wide range of corneal diseases and pathologies.
- Demonstrate the necessary surgical skills to manage common corneal conditions and their associated complications.
- Design, conduct, and contribute to scientific research, including the preparation and publication of research findings.
Eligibility Criteria:
Candidates must hold an MD/MS in Ophthalmology recognized by the Nepal Medical Council (NMC) and be competent in performing cataract surgery.
Duration: 12 Months
Application Process:
Applicants are requested to apply through Biratnagar Eye Hospital www.leecs.org with the relevant document. Selected candidates will receive information from Biratnagar Eye Hospital within two weeks of submission of the application. Upon Successful payment of the course fee, admission letter will be sent.
For International Candidates:
International applicants must obtain a Temporary Registration Certificate from the Nepal Medical Council (NMC). The registration process is coordinated through the organization and may take time. Placement and scheduling will be confirmed only after NMC registration approval
