GLAUCOMA FELLOWSHIP

Introduction

The Glaucoma Fellowship at Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital and Biratnagar Eye Hospital is a 12 Month advanced training program designed to provide comprehensive clinical, diagnostic, laser, and surgical experience in the evaluation and management of glaucoma.

Under the supervision of experienced glaucoma specialists, fellows develop the knowledge and practical skills required to diagnose and manage different types of glaucoma, interpret diagnostic investigations, perform selected procedures, and participate in glaucoma research.

Course highlights :

Clinical training

  • Comprehensive evaluation and management of glaucoma patients.
  • Assessment of intraocular pressure using applanation tonometry.
  • Gonioscopy and anterior chamber angle evaluation.
  • Slit-lamp biomicroscopy and stereoscopic optic nerve head assessment using 70D and 90D lenses.
  • Diagnosis and management of primary open-angle glaucoma, angle-closure glaucoma, secondary glaucoma, and childhood glaucoma.
  • Medical management and long-term follow-up of glaucoma patients.

Diagnostic training

  • Automated visual field testing and interpretation.
  • Optical coherence tomography of the retinal nerve fiber layer and optic nerve head.
  • Central corneal thickness measurement and pachymetry.
  • Correlation of clinical findings with structural and functional investigations.

Laser procedures

  • Nd:YAG laser peripheral iridotomy.
  • Transscleral cyclophotocoagulation.
  • Patient selection and perioperative management for glaucoma laser procedures.

Surgical training

  • Assisting and progressively participating in glaucoma surgeries under supervision.
  • Trabeculectomy with or without mitomycin C.
  • Combined cataract and glaucoma surgery, including trabeculectomy with small-incision cataract surgery or phacoemulsification and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation.
  • Observation and assistance in glaucoma drainage device implantation.
  • Observation of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedures.
  • Observation of childhood and congenital glaucoma surgeries.
  • Preoperative evaluation, postoperative management, and identification of surgical complications.

Academic activities and research

  • Case presentations and clinical discussions.
  • Journal clubs and evidence-based learning.
  • Participation in clinical research and scientific presentations.
  • Development of research methodology and academic writing skills.

Eligibility criteria

Candidates must hold an MD/MS in Ophthalmology recognized by the Nepal Medical Council (NMC) and be competent in performing cataract surgery.

12 Month

Applicants are requested to apply through Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital and Biratnagar Eye Hospital www.leecs.org with the relevant document. Selected candidates will receive information within two weeks of submission of the application. Upon Successful payment of the course fee, admission letter will be sent.

For International Candidates:

 International applicants must obtain a Temporary Registration Certificate from the Nepal Medical Council (NMC). The registration process is coordinated through the organization and may take time. Placement and scheduling will be confirmed only after NMC registration approval.
